Farewell, Fourth Elder

"Mo Yang, the Fourth Elder, is dead, and you still dare to kneel? You should be the one to die as an apology!"

"The Fourth Elder's death is a direct result of your actions, leading to significant losses for our Lingxu Sect. Your death would evoke no sympathy!"

"You still haven't entered the third-tier Foundation of the Qi Realm[i] after years of training. Mo Yang, you are a failure. The Lingxu Sect has no room for failures like you, so leave!"

"With the Fourth Elder gone, there’s no one left to shield you. The sect leader has ordered Mu Feng Peak to merge with the main peak starting tomorrow. From now on, the Lingxu Sect will no longer have a place for you!"

In the remote mountains of the Lingxu Sect, a fifteen or sixteen-year-old boy knelt silently before a tomb. His face was expressionless, seemingly impervious to the shouts and insults directed at him by over a dozen sect disciples, some even jabbing their fingers at him.

He appeared not to hear them, his face devoid of emotion, his eyes staring blankly ahead as if he were a walking shell. This boy was Mo Yang.

Mu Feng Peak was the last of the original five peaks of the Lingxu Sect, which had all gradually declined over the years. The Fourth Elder, in charge of Mu Feng, often gathered medicinal materials and paid little attention to internal matters, causing discontent within the sect. Consequently, former disciples of Mu Feng either left the sect or transferred to other peaks. Now, Mu Feng stood desolate, with only Mo Yang remaining.

Mo Yang had always known that Mu Feng would eventually merge with another peak within the Lingxu Sect, yet when that day finally arrived, an unexpected disappointment weighed on him. As he gazed at the fresh tomb before him, memories of the Fourth Elder's kind face persistently replayed in his mind. For Mo Yang, the Fourth Elder was more than just his master; he was the only family he had ever known.

Ten years ago, the Fourth Elder rescued him from the jaws of a fierce beast during his travels, brought him back to the Lingxu Sect, and accepted him as his disciple, guiding him in the ways of cultivation.

When Mo Yang first began his training, he found it easy to condense his true energy, impressing everyone at the Lingxu Sect with his potential. However, he never anticipated that his path would ultimately lead to despair rather than glory. After a decade of effort, he was unable even to reach the third level of Qi Condensation, struggling to store the Qi he had condensed in his meridians. Throughout his cultivation journey, Mo Yang had unfortunately become a dismal failure.

Over the years, he memorized all the martial arts teachings the Fourth Elder shared and honed the techniques and secrets he was taught. Yet now, this knowledge felt like a bitter reminder of his predicament. The Fourth Elder had done everything within his power to prevent Mo Yang’s remarkable talent from being squandered, but all efforts had proven futile.

Half a month ago, news broke that a Sacred Grass had suddenly appeared on Shiwan Mountain, attracting the interest of all the major sects. Despite warnings from others, the Fourth Elder insisted on going, believing it could be a chance to change Mo Yang's fate. Tragically, the elder did not return.

Later, several elders of the Lingxu Sect secretly investigated and learned from some cultivators that the Fourth Elder had been killed by a powerful cultivator from the Dao Sect who sought to steal the rare medicinal herb he had found. The Dao Sect was a formidable and ancient force with a lineage spanning thousands of years and an unfathomable foundation. Faced with such a colossal threat, the elders of the Lingxu Sect chose to remain silent in their anger and shifted all blame onto Mo Yang. This sentiment was echoed by many disciples, leading to Mo Yang's relentless criticism and harsh treatment.

"After tomorrow, there will be no more wooden peaks in the Lingxu Sect. You will have to fend for yourselves!" The Second Elder glanced at the scene from a distance, made this proclamation, and then turned to leave.

After all the disciples had gone, Mo Yang found himself seated alone at the tomb, surrounded by verdant grass and listening to the winds that whistled past him. His emotions sank to an all-time low.

“It’s time to go…” he whispered after a lengthy silence.

But an overwhelming sense of confusion washed over him. Where could he possibly go? "I am an orphan. No place in this world feels like home!"As his thoughts spiraled, a glint of self-derision appeared in his eyes.

“Master, don’t worry. I will keep pushing forward and strive to master martial arts. One day, I will avenge you!"

In contemplating his circumstances, he found himself perplexed. Everything seemed normal, yet he could never maintain the condensed True Qi
[1] within his meridians. Each time he gathered it, it would soon vanish, creating a repetitive cycle that had lasted ten years. His master, the Fourth Elder, could not assist him, and the Lingxu Sect’s elders had no solutions.

As the last rays of the sunset disappeared, darkness enveloped the world. Mo Yang understood this was his final night at the Lingxu Sect.
