Chapter 17: Mother-and-Daughter duo

She walked over with one hand tucked in her pocket while using the other to grab the phone from her mother’s hand.

He Honghua turned in surprise to face her. Meanwhile, the director continued to speak on the line in a taunting manner, "Well, it’s not entirely out of the question for your son to come back to school. It’s just that we are already halfway through the semester. You will have to deal with numerous layers of bureaucracy. You people probably don’t understand this procedure, but that’s how schools function. If you truly want him back, you may need to provide some incentives and show your commitment; not everyone gets accepted into reputable schools, you know?"

Fu Jiu's expression turned frosty after hearing those comments. An intensity, never seen before, appeared on her striking face. "You’re correct. We commoners are oblivious to your nonsense. But openly asking parents for bribes? Heh, Director Zhang, do you not want your job anymore?"

The director heard her words and instantly became enraged. "Okay, okay, okay! Fu Jiu, you win! Our school can't educate students like you! You listen, even if your mother begs me, I won't do anything! Trash like you can just go anywhere you want!"

PA! He hung up.

He Honghua reacted while still holding onto Fu Jiu's arm. Although Fu Jiu was a girl, she stood at 5'8", a whole head taller than the short and chubby He Honghua. "You kid! Why are you acting so naively?" He Honghua was so anxious that she forgot to be angry; all she wanted was to bow her head and make that phone call again!

Fu Jiu gently wrapped her arms around He Honghua’s waist and spoke softly, "Mum, I don't care about that school. You don't need to accept being humiliated like this."

He Honghua's hand froze mid-dial. Her daughter hadn’t called her “Mum” for a long time. She wasn’t sure when that had begun, but every time they met, they ended up fighting. She knew that Fu Jiu didn’t want to see her and that she didn’t want her to show up at her school. Hearing her call her “Mum” and feeling her embrace were memories from many years ago. He Honghua could hardly believe her own ears.

Fu Jiu smiled at her, then turned to the others, saying, "My mother hasn't eaten anything yet. Please ask the maid to cook a few dishes and make some sweet potato congee."

"Yes, young master!" Chen Xiaodong eagerly took the order and rushed to the kitchen. He was shocked, too. When did young master ever show so much concern for Madam? In similar situations before, the young master would have yelled at her, leaving them both upset. Throwing cell phones around had become normal. But after the young master returned from the hospital, he seemed to have changed… for the better.

He Honghua sat down, still confused by the situation. It all felt surreal until Fu Jiu began picking up food and placing it in her bowl. He Honghua glanced at Fu Jiu's messy silver hair and noticed that her hand holding the chopsticks was shaking. She deliberately slowed her eating pace, knowing that her daughter didn’t like how she ate.

Seeing this, Fu Jiu turned her head. Her strikingly handsome face was focused on the rice that He Honghua was picking up grain by grain. Without saying a word, Fu Jiu picked up her own bowl, mixed a dish into it with her chopsticks, and took two mouthfuls of rice at once, making her cheeks puff up.

She smiled at He Honghua, looking unexpectedly cute. "Even the food tastes better when eating with Mum."

When He Honghua looked at Fu Jiu, she couldn't help but cover her mouth, her eyes filled with tears.

Fu Jiu set down her chopsticks and sat next to her mother, pulling her close and gently wiping away her tears. "Mum, I'm sorry for everything that happened in the past. I won’t behave like that again." Just those few words left, He Honghua was overwhelmed and unable to calm down for a long while.

Fu Jiu regarded her mother, a middle-aged woman she had often looked down upon, and reflected on how her mother had never given up on her despite that. She berated herself internally, feeling like an a**hole.

In that moment, the mother-and-daughter duo began a new chapter in their relationship. He Honghua was filled with joy and asked what Fu Jiu wanted, her face flushed, thinking she would buy anything for her daughter.

Fu Zhongyi enjoyed having an affair outside the family, making it difficult for He Honghua to navigate the business world. People laughed at her boorishness and at her inability to tame her own man. Additionally, given her background, things were harder for her than for others.

The fact that the world often blames the victims while rarely holding the cheaters and homewreckers accountable was both mind-blowing and a harsh reality for many wives. It was truly disgusting.

"Mum, I don't need anything," Fu Jiu replied. "You should focus on resting more since the business negotiations aren’t going well."

As Fu Jiu massaged her mother’s arms, He Honghua felt warmth in her heart from her daughter's words. Though she wanted to maintain the harmonious atmosphere, she couldn’t help but express her concerns.

"Jiu’er, I know you don't like studying, but a person needs knowledge. I will find a way for you to return to school."

Fu Jiu interrupted gently but firmly, “About that, Mum, you don’t need to seek anyone's help. I will make them beg for me to return!”
