Chapter 23: The noose is tightening

In a another part of the city, Qin Mo used the remote to turn on the TV and glanced at his subordinates, furrowing his brow slightly. "What are you all crying about?"

"I only knew programming. When I was young, I got expelled because my teacher claimed I wasn’t a good student," Fatty said while wiping his face. "If it weren’t for CEO Qin discovering me, I wouldn’t have ended up a hacker."

Qin Mo regarded the others. "Rich kid, don’t tell me you got expelled as well."

"I’m so touched!" Coco exclaimed, gnawing on the ear of his rabbit toy. "That jerk of a director deserves to be taken down. Captain, you should call your mom right now so he can't escape!"

At this, Qin Mo tilted his head and lit a cigarette, his expression somber. "I don’t need to; someone will make sure he pays."

"Who?" Coco asked, surprised.

Qin Mo flicked his silver lighter with elegant fingers. "Spade Z."

Upon hearing that, both Fatty and Coco leaped up. "CEO Qin, are you implying that Spade Z is behind all this?"

Qin Mo held the cigarette between his fingers, looking dignified in his fitted suit. He appeared relaxed yet firmly grounded.

"Who else would reveal so much of Director Zhang’s private chat history? Someone must have hacked into his phone. Spade Z has to be one of those six kids who were interviewed."

"Among these students?!" Coco and Fatty exchanged shocked glances, their eyes wide with disbelief. The six students before them seemed extremely ordinary. One of them was openly gay and had once pursued CEO Qin. Could someone like this really be Spade Z?

Qin Mo raised his gaze, his handsome face partially obscured by misty smoke. "Why are you surprised? Didn't I mention that Spade Z was a student?"

"But CEO Qin, how can you be so sure that one of these six people is Spade Z?" Fatty remained puzzled.

Qin Mo glanced at the news page and, without hesitation, stated, "Because only a victim would seek justice."

Fatty was taken aback but then suddenly enlightened. If Spade Z was among them, it narrowed down the search significantly. There were only four boys among the six.

That night, at the Fu residence, Fu Jiu retrieved a USB drive. As she headed downstairs, she heard He Honghua arguing loudly on the phone. The conversation didn't seem to be going well, as He Honghua abruptly dropped her hand and stared blankly in one direction.

Noticing Fu Jiu approaching, He Honghua forced a smile. "Come, sit down. I've made your favorite pig's feet with chilies and potatoes!"

"The housekeeper woke up at 3 a.m. to prepare it for you, letting it simmer on low heat," the maid added as she brought over tea. "You’re going to love how tender it is."

Hearing this, Fu Jiu wrapped her arm around He Honghua's shoulder. "Thanks, Mum."

"You don't need to thank your own mother," He Honghua replied, blushing a little, then added with a shy smile, "You're too old to be hugging me like this!" Despite her words, her happiness was evident.

Suddenly, the phone on the coffee table began to ring incessantly, creating a jarring sound. He Honghua checked the caller ID, and her smile faded. She tried to shield Fu Jiu from seeing it. Understanding her mother's expression, Fu Jiu didn’t wait for He Honghua to ask and handed her a cup of tea.

"Mum, answer it. No matter what happens, I’m here with you," Fu Jiu said softly.

With her daughter's support, He Honghua found the courage to speak up. She grabbed her phone and answered, "Hello. You tell them that I—He Honghua—don’t owe them anything from the past year. Now that the gaming contest is approaching, they want to sever ties? Do they even have a conscience?! 100,000 CNY per person? Du Ze, you're truly outrageous!"

"Boss He, I’m speaking to you calmly. Why are you reacting like this?" Du Ze's tone was laden with sarcasm. "I’m just glad I left early and followed Sister Qing. Once a peasant, always a peasant. You’ve always been short-sighted. Here’s some advice: since you once helped me, you should divorce Boss Fu as soon as possible. What right does a 'fat village aunt’ have to compete with Sister Qing?"

He Honghua hung up the phone in frustration and tossed it aside. Her chest heaved with a mixture of anger and sadness, her emotions swirling within her. Realizing that Fu Jiu was watching her, she quickly composed herself and said, "The pig's feet should be ready. Let me get you some."

But Fu Jiu grasped He Honghua's arm firmly and spoke in a low, serious voice. "Mum, what happened at the company?"
